Why Weighing Your Coffee Changes Everything

Why Weighing Your Coffee Changes Everything

If your coffee tastes amazing one day and just okay the next, the culprit is often measurement. Scoops vary a lot depending on the roast and grind. A scale takes the guesswork out.

Why Scoops Aren't Reliable

Dark roasts are lighter and puffier than light roasts, so the same scoop can hold noticeably different amounts of coffee. Weighing gives you the same dose every time.

Ratios Made Easy

Most brewing guides use a coffee-to-water ratio. With a scale, following them is simple:

  • Pour-over: about 1:16
  • French press: about 1:15
  • Espresso: about 1:2 (for example, 18g in, 36g out)

Features Worth Having

  • 0.1g precision for espresso and small doses.
  • A built-in timer to track bloom and brew time.
  • A heat-resistant pad so hot drippers and kettles don't cause problems.
  • Rechargeable battery—one less thing to replace.
